Why Reading Matters BBC 4 February 9th

Jen Tomkins at The Reader Organisation has emailed to highlight a TV documentary coming up on BBC4. The documentary covers the developing field of therapeutic reading, based on research into the way the brain is affected by reading:

Why Reading Matters, BBC Four

At 9pm on 9th February 2009, The Reader Organisation’s pioneering wellbeing project, Get Into Reading, will feature in a documentary on BBC4 called Why Reading Matters. More information here: Why Reading Matters.

Here’s the blurb from the programme, complete with a note on ‘the new digital revolution’. I hope that aspect of the documentary is more thoughtful than it sounds:

Science writer Rita Carter tells the story of how modern neuroscience has revealed that reading, something most of us take for granted, unlocks remarkable powers. Carter explains how the classic novel Wuthering Heights allows us to step inside other minds and understand the world from different points of view, and she wonders whether the new digital revolution could threaten the values of classic reading.
